ORGANIZATION HISTORY:
The Police Stress Unit was originally formed in 1983 and became incorporated in 1989 as a "Not for Profit" Corporation. We are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service under section 501(C)(3). The Police Stress Unit was formed by Law Enforcement Officers for Law Enforcement Officers. We are 167 volunteers across the state of New Jersey of which 145 are Certified Debriefer's under the guidelines of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. The purpose of the unit is to provide confidential support to the Law Enforcement Community. Our history began in the early 1980's with a couple of recovering cops who did not have a safe place to get support for their addiction problem. By 1987 there were approximately 20 of us and word began to spread throughout the Law Enforcement Community in the S. Jersey area. We began to receive calls from local administrators to conduct training seminars for them in early detection of chemical abuse within the rank and file. By 1989 we incorporated as the S.J. Police Stress Unit and received our lst. grant money from The Board of Chosen Freeholders of Camden County.
